personality
'cause your body's made of metal

one of the most consistent and fundamental things to know about harry potter is that he is unceasingly good-hearted, his greatest strength being his capacity to love. despite his abusive and neglectful childhood, harry potter never loses his ability to show compassion and kindness for and towards others. he frees dobby the house-elf from the malfoys, he stands up for hagrid (and the population of half-bloods, muggle-borns and half-breeds), he befriends those whom he likes for their personalities no matter what or where they come from; in his first year he turns down malfoy's so-called 'friendship' in favour of ron weasley. he would willingly put himself at risk, even sacrificing himself in order to save those he loves. in the order of the phoenix, he risks just about everything in order to go to the department of mysteries in order to save sirius black - even when he finds out it'd all been a trick played by voldemort. his love and loyalty is one of his greatest strengths but it can also be used against him as a result.

time and again, harry shows an inspiring strength of will in order to follow his own morals and beliefs. he repels the imperius curse set off by the false mad-eye moody (barty crouch jr) because he simply doesn't believe in doing whatever he asked him to; and his determination is also shown in each and every game of quidditch. he resists the temptation of the dark arts on several occasions, never giving in to the darkness and always working towards good. he is unceasingly brave even when he's terrified, willing to accept his death and sacrifice himself because he knows it's the only thing he can do to save everyone he loves. he asks his parents, will it hurt? but his fears don't change his decision. he is selfless and courageous - sometimes to a fault.

his selflessness also makes it so that he often puts the entire weight of the world on his shoulders. only he should sacrifice himself. only he should lose his life if everyone else can live. in less life/death circumstances, harry's selflessness manifests itself into a kind of pride and independence in which he'll often choose not to ask for help or to avoid and deny it if it's being offered. even during his first year, he assumed he would go on alone to find professor quirrell and the philosopher's stone. (hermione smartly told him that he was being stupid if he thought he was going alone.) in his fourth year, he worked to figure out the second task on his own, procrastinating until the very end when dobby helped him out. during the order of the phoenix, he chose to deal with cedric diggory's death on his own and felt more and more alone in dealing with these tragedies without anyone to speak to.

but! even with his possibly martyr tendencies he never backs down from taking initiative if he must. he winds up teaching a small group of students after hours how to defend themselves against dark magic and forms 'dumbledore's army'. he never asks or wants any of the power of leadership for himself but his experience and/or his drive to do the right thing and protect others makes him a good leader. and in less serious matters, his experience in quidditch and his passion for the sport also makes him a very good captain of the team.

of course harry is like all teenage boys too. he can be moody, reckless and impulsive, acting a bit stupid, making friends and enemies in the school alike. getting into trouble starts in his first year when harry, ron and hermione go through the booby-traps laid out for more skilled wizards. in his second year, harry goes head-to-head against tom riddle in the chamber of secrets, fighting and killing a basilisk. harry also has a hot temper. he gets into a few arguments against his best friends, mostly over petty things. in his fourth year, he and ron get into the worst fight of their friendship thus far when ron doesn't believe harry that he was not responsible for putting his name into the goblet of fire. in his third year, he loses his temper when his aunt marge insults his parents, inflating her with wandless magic so that she turns into a giant balloon. possibly due to the emotional stress from the trauma and trials he endured, harry can sometimes be moody and sullen as well. in his good moments, as well as moments of ridiculousness (such as his professors making attempts to bully him and his friends), his humour comes out in dry wit and sass, and is sometimes rather cheeky - all very teenage boy.

he is also prone to obsessive behaviour, possibly inherited from having voldemort's horcrux attached to him, but also as a part of harry's very determined, focused personality. his obsessions often lead him into a single-minded focus that is followed by a whole lot of trouble. his obsession with the deathly hallows, for example, makes him forget about his hunt for the horcruxes and guides him into life-threatening traps. his obsession with draco malfoy and what he was up to in his free time during the events of the half-blood prince also lead him to forgetting his studies and other, voldemort-related priorities.

while he is deeply a good character at his core, harry isn't a saint either. he can be vengeful and spiteful towards those who have done him wrong, but more especially those who have done those he loves wrong. he can be petty towards those who treat him badly, such as his treatment of draco malfoy, snape and the dursleys. he turned a blind eye to umbridge's end, letting the centaurs take her away with the line, 'i'm sorry professor, but i must not tell lies' ... and actively went after bellatrix lestrange with all intentions of hurting her (using one of the unforgiveable curses) immediately following sirius' murder and disappearance through the veil. he also attempted to attack snape for killing albus dumbledore. when those he loves are in harm's way, harry really will stop at nothing to protect and avenge them.

of course, harry is merciful too. in the prisoner of azkaban, harry stops sirius and remus from killing their ex-friend peter pettigrew because his death wouldn't bring his father (and mother) back. his death would only be a regrettable act on sirius and remus' part, tarnishing their goodness.

after everything harry has been through, he is quite rightly a complicated character with a very complicated array of emotions. so many things happen to him in his lifetime, during his formative years, that it's hard for harry to really navigate how he feels about it all. his personality is ultimately good, kind, and instilled with his capacity to love - but that doesn't mean he doesn't have some dark aspects too. during the order of the phoenix, harry actually has a conversation with sirius about this, about his grief and his feelings, how he always feels so angry and how he fears he might be becoming a bad person. his godfather assures him that it's the choices he makes and not who he is that makes him good or bad, and that he is, ultimately, good.

Family potter family.

harry will be coming in fresh from his godfather's death, having lost him only a couple of months ago, and is now preparing the return to hogwarts for his sixth year. he hasn't heard from anyone, and he's been finding it harder and harder to spend the summer months at the dursleys especially knowing there's so much more he can do, so much more he has to do. he's now aware of the prophecy and those words haunt his days and nights, they could practically drive him crazy. at the end of all this, he knows that he will have to face voldemort off himself, and that while one might live the other must die - whoever that may be.

he's a bit of an anxious, frightened mess. he wants more than anything to have the time to grieve over his godfather but at the same time, he also knows that sirius wouldn't want that. his parents wouldn't. the whole wizarding community are depending on him to try and stop voldemort from turning everything into a real-life nightmare. so! putting all of this pressure upon himself, he will continue to fight the good fight.

at the moment the wizarding world is dark and it's only getting darker. voldemort has returned and everyone knows it, no longer are people denying this fact - including the ministry of magic. the death eaters are gathering and it will soon begin to infiltrate the school and safe haven harry calls home.

harry's arrival (in the test drive) into this timeline has definitely proven to be a shock. he came face-to-face with his dad, his mum and his godfather so far, and his reaction has been bittersweet. seeing his family alive and well and young again fills him with a feeling he can't even imagine - but learning where he is and more importantly who happens to be in power is going to set harry off on a very determined and potentially dark path. he will be more determined than ever to stop riddle from maintaining his power - especially knowing the way this ministry is treating muggle-borns and half-bloods. he'll likely try to wrangle up an order of the phoenix/dumbledore's army during his time here, all while trying (desperately) to find his own way back into his own timeline because everyone else there needs him. his best friends need him. the rest of the wizarding world needs him.

abilities
take determination / take whatever you need

- can create a strong enough patronus: the stag
- canNOT do legilimency or occlumency to save his life, seriously why is he so terrible
- expert flier: flying on his broomstick is the most natural thing in the world for him
- can catch things in mid-air really well (due to being a seeker): youngest seeker in a century! he was recruited to his house's team in his first year
- fair grades in school but honestly nothing special: mostly he relied a lot on hermione granger to help him pass his homework assignments and study for his exams
- adept with defense against the dark arts for the obvious survival reasons: he'd always had a knack for defending himself against dark spells, etc.
- he actually has a very good handle on many spells outside of his age group's knowledge, mostly because he used them all in very practical life-saving situations: defense spells, offensive spells, spells to capture things and to repel them, some hexes
- in situations of desperate need, harry has also shown to be fairly proficient with wandless spells
- he is also equipped with some slightly reluctant but very much prominent leadership skills that make him a good enough man to follow into the war

NETWORK
[ Harry's almost ashamed for the question he's about to ask but he's run a little low on options and point-blank asking the network at large about his ... possible intentions is foolish. Incredibly foolish.

Anyone could read this, after all.

But he's taken on the What Would Hermione Granger Do? method to heart. ]

Can anyone direct me to some history books here? A library outside of Hogwarts perhaps?

It's just I feel I ought to brush up on my history. Just a little
[ Uhhhh -- ] preparation for the new year
